A Seminar for All Fibre Enthusiasts
The Strathroy Pioneer Treadlers Spinners and Weavers are hosting the next OHS Southwest Region Seminar “Mood Indigo”, on May 24, 2014, at 137 Frank Street, Strathroy. Keynote speaker is Harriet Boon, a very experienced Indigo dyer as well as a spinner and weaver. Her presentation "Blue Moon - In Search of the Best of Blue" will follow global trade routes and consider the politics and intrigue of painters and textile guilds. In the afternoon there are 4 workshops to choose from, related to dyeing, weaving, spinning and basketry or a trip to the local Strathroy Caradoc Museum where there is an exhibition on quilts and coverlets “Piecing Stories Together” and a guided tour to view their permanent textile collection and learn how the items are preserved.
You do not need to be a member of the OHS or your local guild nor do you need to have experience in any of the subjects. If you do have an interest in any of these activities and would like to find out more about it all, come and join us. For the more experienced fibre enthusiast there will be new avenues to discover.

web site rather than in print. This way we can update it more frequently and distribute it further. Network Drafting Workshop with Jette Vandermeiden
Kingston Handloom Weavers and Spinners Studio, March 21 -23 2014. Cost: $230.00
Network drafting is a method of designing curvilinear threadings for multishaft looms. The weave design on the fabric shows more curvature and breaks the rigidity of the vertical/horizontal lines that weaves usually have. Two methods of designing will be used: digitizing and telescoping. Using a freehand curve, you will learn to create a proper network draft by using various matrices called initials, and then develop a tie-up and a treadling plan.

Invitation to Submit Teaching Proposals
OHS invites instructors to submit proposals for hands-on workshops (pre-conference and conference full and half days) and lecture seminars (short sessions for awareness building and ½ day sessions for more in-depth exploration of the concepts) on fibre-related topics. Fibre related can include: weaving, spinning, dyeing, basketry, beading, business of art and craft, clothing construction, colour theory, computer applications, design, embellishment, finishes, creative process, ethnic investigations, felting, fibre education and/or history, rug-making, tablet weaving, tapestry weaving, and other fibre techniques.
New OHS initiative -
Spinning and Weaving Resources for Youth Project Proposal
One of the mandates of the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners is to arouse public interest in spinning and weaving throughout Ontario. We propose supporting our members by developing a set of resources and activities that they could use when they are sharing their skills with young people (in schools, 4H clubs, Guides, Scouts etc) Many of our members have ideas they have already used successfully; by offering an opportunity to share these ideas with each other, we assist each other, and also benefit children and youth throughout Ontario. An additional feature of the resource activities would be to relate the activities to the Ontario Curriculum, in various subject areas and at various grade levels, especially Social Studies, Science and Technology, Visual Arts and Family Studies. This would assist teachers in their planning.
In order to make this idea a reality, we need to form a committee of interested members who are willing to develop the resources. While they need not be teachers, it would be helpful to have some members who have experience teaching in Ontario schools, who are familiar with the curriculum. We especially need someone to chair the committee. While funds (as usual!) are scarce, we have had a generous donation to help get this project started.
