February Newsletter Warkworth Spinners and Weavers

As the snow falls and the wind blows don't forget our monthly Guild meeting Feb.13, 2014 from 10am until 3pm. This month our meeting will feature Christine Muir and Viking knitting.

From Joan McCulloch
October 7, 2014 will be the 25th year since Spin In started.  Who would have thought in 1989 we would still be meeting annually to celebrate spinning, friendship and the sharing of information.  At our last meeting we discussed ways to make this a special day.  We discussed giving everyone a gift but the thought of providing 75-100 people with something was overwhelming. It was decided that in addition to our regular door prizes, we would have 25 fibre related door prizes.  These  could be books, magazines, fibre, Christmas ornaments.  If you have something, please bring it to a meeting and Joan McCulloch will assemble the prizes over the next months.  We do not want to leave everything until fall.

The Strathroy Pioneer Treadlers Spinners and Weavers are hosting the next OHS Southwest Region Seminar “Mood Indigo”, on May 24, 2014, at 137 Frank Street, Strathroy.  Keynote speaker is Harriet Boon, a very experienced Indigo dyer as well as a spinner and weaver. In the afternoon there are 4 workshops to choose from, related to dyeing, weaving, spinning and basketry or a trip to the local Strathroy Caradoc Museum where there is an exhibition on quilts and coverlets  “Piecing Stories Together” and a guided tour to view their permanent textile collection and learn how the items are preserved.

If you do have an interest in any of these activities and would like to find out more about it all, come and join us. Network Drafting Workshop with Jette Vandermeiden
Kingston Handloom Weavers and Spinners Studio, March 21 -23 2014.  Cost: $230.00
Contact: Bridget Lewis ( cblewis@bell.net )
Network drafting is a method of designing curvilinear  threadings for multishaft looms.  The weave design on the fabric shows more curvature and breaks the rigidity of the vertical/horizontal lines that weaves usually have. Two methods of designing will be used: digitizing and telescoping.  Using a freehand curve, you will learn to create a proper network draft by using various matrices called initials, and then develop a tie-up and a treadling plan.

New OHS initiative -
Spinning and Weaving Resources for Youth Project Proposal
One of the mandates of the Ontario Handweavers and Spinners is to arouse public interest in spinning and weaving throughout Ontario.  We propose supporting our members by developing a set of resources and activities that they could use when they are sharing their skills with young people (in schools, 4H clubs, Guides, Scouts etc)  Many of our members have ideas they have already used successfully; by offering an opportunity to share these ideas with each other, we assist each other, and also benefit children and youth throughout Ontario.  An additional feature of the resource activities would be to relate the activities to the Ontario Curriculum, in various subject areas and at various grade levels, especially Social Studies, Science and Technology, Visual Arts and Family Studies. This would assist teachers in their planning.
In order to make this idea a reality, we need to form a committee of interested members who are willing to develop the resources. While they need not be teachers, it would be helpful to have some members who have experience teaching in Ontario schools, who are familiar with the curriculum. We especially need someone to chair the committee.   While funds (as usual!) are scarce, we have had a generous donation to help get this project started.  If you are interested in being a part of this project, would you please email me as soon as possible.  Sandi Nemenyi, President, OHS    sandi.nemenyi@gmail.com

January 2014 Guild meeting

WARKWORTH SPINNERS AND WEAVERS
GUILD MINUTES JANUARY 09/2014
10 MEMBERS PRESENT
Joan asked that the members contemplate were Spin-In is going. This is our 25th. Anniversary and we need to decide if we are going to continue with the smaller Guild membership. We can go out on a high note or we need to make the commitment to continue. With our numbers everybody will need to pitch in so that not just a few are doing all the work.
It was also decided that being our 25th. We would have 25 door prizes featuring small fiber related articles, such as pins, ornaments, needles, hooks, wristlets, earrings
Karen Richens informed us about Warkworth Pop-Up Art. Giving artists the opportunity to display their art around town.
Contact: David Pollock    705-924-1735  for more info
She also told us about a single treadle Quebec Spinning Wheel for sale.
She has seen it and says that it is in good condition.

For those of you who were unable to join us on the 9th. You missed a really informative seminar on the characteristics, prep, and uses of worsted and woolen spun yarns. We touched on what worsted yarn looks and feels like and how to spin it. We then went through the same process for woolen yarn. We were able to try out some combs to see what combed fiber looks like when spun short or long draft. All of this was presented in such a way that even if you were a beginning spinner, you would be able to follow and the information would help you get to the next level.
Thank-You Karen Richens for doing such a wonderful job.

Next meeting  February 13 2014 starting at 10:00 am
